As an intervention for the aftermath of the Super Typhoon Rai, the project for the New Siargao Market and Community hubs aims to provide the affected populations with new resilient facilities that can be quickly assembled to support the communities in the rebuilding efforts.
In these structures, there is no difference between walls and roof. The continuous system holds the structure together and prevents resistance to strong winds. There is also no need to reinforce the structure like in typical A-frame systems. The angle of the pillar-beams is dimensioned and positioned to become a self-trussed system.
Beyond a building, the idea is to develop a simple yet resilient construction system that can be scaled to different uses and adapted to different needs – from small structures as waiting sheds, to bigger and more complex as the Burgo community center.
Its ease of assembly, mainly resourcing to local materials, pretends to be the foundation for multiple new constructions, in order to rebuild faster and stronger. These structures can serve emergency functions on the immediate term, and become future homes and community facilities in the future.
They are thought to work as standalone functions - such as sheds, houses, greenhouses, communal kitchens, laundries and toilets; but as well to be grouped together to define bigger communal facilities -like schools, health centers or public halls.
Designed around replicable modules built of locally sourced materials, the new prototype is readily scalable and adaptable to other nearby communities
